A couple of songs from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' upcoming album, It's Blitz!, have leaked on the Internet, with rather surprising results. Upon first hearing the atmospheric synths that open "Heads Will Roll", it's clear that Karen O. and the boys have eskewed any notions of "business as usual". Then comes the 4X4 drum machine and the noticeable lack of Nick's shredding guitars. Before long you're starting to seriously question if you're listening to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs at all, with few elements other than Karen's undeniably distinctive vocal indicating this is even the same band.
To sum it up, YYY have gone electro on us. How this will translate to the rest of the album once we get a chance to hear it all remains to be seen, but one thing can be certain - they sure don't like repeating themselves. It would have been only too convenient to revert back to the sexed up pop-noise of Fever To Tell, or the defiantly somber tones layered throughout Show Your Bones. It is refreshing to see that they haven't rested on their laurels and are continuing to challenge their creativity as well as their fans, forcing us as much as they might have forced their own selves to resist the desire to retread to previously trodden paths.
It should be an excellent new era for YYY.
